SUICIDE AWARENESS PROGRAMME

As part of Suicide Prevention Week – September 2025, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of Seethalakshmi Achi College for Women, Pallathur, affiliated to Alagappa University, Karaikudi, organized an Awareness Programme on Suicide Prevention on 11th September 2025 (Thursday) at 2:00 PM in the college premises.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Times Health Care Foundation & Charitable Trust, with active participation from students of the Social Work Department, Alagappa University. The primary objective of the programme was to create awareness about mental health, stress management, and suicide prevention among students.

Project Objectives

The programme was graced by the Chief Guest, Ms. Emme Carmichael, Psychologist, Global Mission Hospital & Research Institute, Karaikudi. She delivered an insightful and motivating session on “Self-Care and Coping Strategies for Stress and Depression.”

In her address, she emphasized:

  • The importance of mental well-being and emotional balance

  • Early identification of stress and depressive symptoms

  • Practical self-care techniques and healthy coping strategies

  • The role of family, friends, and institutional support systems in suicide prevention

Her session encouraged students to seek help without hesitation and reinforced the idea that mental health care is as important as physical health.

To spread awareness in an engaging and impactful manner, Alagappa University Social Work students presented a series of cultural performances, including:

  • Skits highlighting mental health challenges and the importance of seeking help

  • Mime and dance performances depicting stress, depression, and positive coping mechanisms

  • Short role plays focused on breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues

These performances effectively conveyed powerful messages through creative expression and left a strong emotional impact on the audience.
